Maurice Cook, world renowned folk artist is from Carbon Hill.

Cook is self-taught and his art depicts people enjoying everyday life and activities typically found throughout the rural South.

A couple of things to look for in his paintings: Although the activities are easily identified, the people are anonymous-they do not have faces. He paints them without facial features so the images can be universal. Also, his dog Charlie will appear somewhere in most of his work.
